USA Swimming is mourning the death of champion distance/open water swimmer, Fran Crippen at age 26. Fran died tragically while competing in a FINA 10 K World Cup event in Fujairah, UAE on Saturday. Several other competitors were treated for heat exhaustion during the event, but the exact cause of death is to be determined. Crippen's USA teammates from New England, Eva Fabian (GMSC) and Alex Meyer (CRIM) participated in the search for Fran and are grieving over the loss of their teammate and friend. Each year, USA Swimming recognizes its members who excel both in the classroom and in the pool. The Scholastic All-America Team is made up of high school student-athletes who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and who have achieved the required time standard in a single event. Through decisive action at the House of Delegates meeting on September 18th, USA Swimming will expand its athlete protection efforts across multiple areas. The measures will educate the membership on the issue, implement athlete protection policies, expand background checking to include all non-athlete members and require those employees and volunteers that interact with athletes to become members. It was announced this evening, at the USA Swimming Convention in Dallas, that Eva Fabian, of Greenwood Memorial Swim Club was elected as the USA SWIMMING OPEN WATER FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE YEAR! This is quite an honor for Eva, who placed first in the 5K event at the World Open Water Championships in July! Congratualtions to EVA and her coach, Jack Fabian for this achievement. Long time New England Swimming coach, Mike Parratto is leaving NES (Seacoast Swimming Association) to move to Indiana. After a thorough search, a new coach has been hired. August Swimmer of the Month Congratulations to Natalie Cotter, who at 10 years old, has been a member of Charles River Aquatics (CRA) for 2 years. She qualified for Zones in both the 50 and 100 Breaststroke. She's an incredibly hard worker who loves to set goals and work for them. She is a great leader on the team, always willing to help her teammates at practice and at meets.
