Magnus Batara was recently selected to represent British Columbia in this summer's Western Canada Games. Magnus was one of only two male para-swimmers selected to the team. This August, Magnus will travel to Kamloops with 19 other BC swimmers to compete. This is Magnus's first selection to a provincial team, and we are all very proud of him. Congratulations, Magnus!

At the SFU LMR today, Melissa Quon (12) qualified for the BC AAA Championships in Victoria this March! Melissa qualified in the 200 butterfly by swimming a gutsy 2:59.26. Taking it out strong Melissa's 100 split was faster than her personal best time in the 100 fly! With the AGD 2's cheering her on, Mel kept pushing through the pain and dropped 8 seconds off her best time to achieve the AAA cut by 1.3 seconds! This past weekend at the CDSC New Year's Invitational a new club record was set by Cathy Ye in PAG 3! Cathy set a new mark in the 13-14 girls 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:33.53. Cathy only turned 13 in November too! Cathy's time is the 5th fastest in BC and 20th in Canada for 13 year old girls this season. Congratulations Cathy!
Last weekend at the CDSC New Years Invitational, several Rapids showed major guts despite a tough week in the water, several bouts of illness, and some issues with legal fishkicks. 12/10/10 Magnus Batara competed today in the Speedo CAN-AM Para-Swimming Championships in Toronto. The field not only included Canadians and Americans, but para-swimmers from Sweden, Brazil, and five other countries. Magnus made finals in both the 100 free and the 100 breaststroke. Magnus swam a personal best and came in sixth in the 100 free (1:10.27 LCM). From November 11-13th over 150 Richmond Rapids Swimmers took part in the annual Swim A Thon and National 5 KM Challenge. There were some outstanding results from every level of the club from RSS 1 to our National swimmers. The RSS swimmers swam during their normal practice time. Level 1 & 2 swimmers had 30 minutes, 3 & 4 had 45 minutes and the level 5's had 60 minutes. 71 swimmers took part including Isaac Zhao in level 1 that swam in the BIG pool and completed 300 meters! 3 time Canadian Olympian, Brian Johns, has launch a new website. Brian grew up in Richmond swimming for the Aquanauts, Richmond Racers and the Richmond Rapids. Brian holds many our senior male club records as well as provincial and national age group records. Brian qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games as a member of the Richmond Rapids!
