Why we set up groups by ability...

Customized Training Plans: Different ability levels require different types of training. Tailoring training plans to ability levels ensures that each swimmer receives appropriate guidance and workouts. Swimmers of different abilities have different endurance levels and capacities for training intensity. By grouping them accordingly, coaches can manage the workload effectively, ensuring that swimmers are neither overtrained nor undertrained.

Enhanced Learning Environment: When swimmers are grouped with others of similar ability, they can push each other to improve without the frustration of being too far ahead or behind. This fosters a more supportive and competitive learning environment, where swimmers can work on similar goals and progress together. Swimmers are more likely to stay engaged and motivated when they are challenged at an appropriate level.

Effective Feedback: Coaches can provide more targeted and effective feedback when working with groups of similar ability. This feedback is more likely to be relevant and actionable, helping swimmers to improve more quickly and effectively.

Competition Preparation: Practicing with peers of similar skill levels allows for more realistic race simulations and helps swimmers develop strategies that are appropriate for their level. It also ensures that swimmers are competing against others of similar ability, which can lead to more fair and motivating races.

  • It is possible for swimmers to spend several seasons in the same Training Group before moving up, as it can depend on multiple factors including when swimmers are physically, mentally and emotionally ready.
  • It is possible for swimmers to start in one Training Group at the beginning of the season, but then also move up a Training Group within a season.
  • Attendance - Swimmers must demonstrate good attendance consistently in their current or most recent Training Group before they can be considered to move up training groups.
  • Swimmers consistently arrive on time, have all required equipment, and be ready to swim at the start of practice. Swimmers must demonstrate a willingness to work hard for the entire practice.
  • In order to meet increased rigors and intensity in training of the next practice group up, swimmers MUST demonstrate they can swim above and beyond the challenges of their current practice group. Coaches place swimmers in groups where they will have the best opportunity to reach their full potential, as well as prevent injury and avoid getting overwhelmed and discouraged.
  • Coaching staff focuses on each athlete's best interests, prioritizing long-term development over hasty advancement. We want athletes to thrive in their new group, not just survive!
