Please contact [email protected] for information or to learn of other training dates to become a USA Swim Official.  The team's USAS Officials are responsible to officiate the rules of swim by USA Swimming standards at USA swim sanctioned meets.  Officiating is a great way to meet other swim parents and you have a great view of the action in the pool!

Below are the things that must be completed to become an official:

  • Register on the USA swimming site as a non-athlete registration (ROC Link =
  • Attend a Sierra Nevada Swimming Officials Clinic.
  • Log into your USA Swimming Account and complete the Background Check. This is an online process that completes in 3-5 days.
  • Log in to your USA Swimming Account; Select Education and then Safe Sport.
    1. Complete Athlete Protection Training (APT). This is an online training course, no cost.
    2. Complete CANRA. This is an online training course, no cost.
  • Work as a trainee for 6 sessions
    1. Get officiating uniform pieces (Sierra Nevada LSC Officiating Dress Code): White polo (RST white polo available), Navy blue pants (and/or shorts), White shoes, White hat (optional), Nametag
    2. A session is not a meet, for example, at most meets there are 5 sessions (Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Sunday morning, and Sunday afternoon)
    3. During these training sessions you will work with an official and shadow them when they work.
    4. Typically, as a stroke and turn official you work based on time and the duration is dependent on the # of officials that are there to help, meaning the more officials that show the shorter the time.
  • Take the online test on USA Swimming (Officials Stroke and Turn). This might sound intimidating but really it isn't.  You can download the test, use the rule book to find the answers and then once you have all the answers offline you then just go back online to fill it in.

Once those steps are completed you are then a carded official to help our team meet our official requirement when we attend meets.

The team will credit your account $100 towards your USA Swimming Fees once your training is complete.

During 2023-2024, all current and new officials will receive a one-time $150 in Arena merchandise credit once all items in the list above are complete.
