COACHES REPORT

The following excerpt is from "The Little Book of Talent" by Daniel Coyle:

We are often taught that talent begins with genetic gifts - that the "talented" are able to effortlessly perform feats the rest of us can only dream about. THIS IS FALSE. Talent begins with brief, powerful encounters that spark motivation by linking your identity to a high-performing person or group. This is called ignition, and it consists of a tiny, world-shifting thought lighting up your unconscious mind: I COULD BE THEM

We all live with a "windshield" of people in front of us; one of the keys to igniting your motivation is to fill your windshield with vivid images of your future self. Studies show that even a brief connection with a role model can vastly increase unconscious motivation. In fact, simply being told that they share a birthday with a mathematician has been shown to improve the amount of effort  people are willing to put into difficult math tasks by 62%! Think of your windshield as an energy source for your brain. Use pictures (the bedroom walls of many an Olympic gold medalist have been covered with photographs of their stars), or better, use video. Book mark a few videos of really good swimmers on YouTube, and watch them before you practice, or after dinner instead of watching TV.

Now, a thought or two from the LAC coaching staff: Everyone needs a positive role model, someone who instills in your own mind the thought: "If she can do it why can't I?" Maybe you already have that person (and by the way we'd like to think you don't need to look too far or too hard for a positive role model to help you on your way). Or maybe you are that role model, and don't even know it! And this can, of course, and sadly, work the other way: if you choose to model your behaviour after someone who doesn't have the same lofty goals as you do, how do you think that is going to impact your own performance? And if someone is looking up to you and you don't even know it, are you behaving in a way that is going to help that little LAC'er become a better swimmer?

So, let's all strive to fill our "windshields" with people who are going to help us get better AND let's all remember that maybe, just maybe, we're filling someone else's "windshield"! That way we can and will move the LAC battleship even further and faster into new waters!

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Nothers Fall Invitational - Senior Officials needed!:  Senior Officials are everyone except Timers and Inspectors of Turns.  Stroke Judges are Senior Officials. To sign up for Senior positions at our meets you email the Competition Coordinator, with the meets, sessions, and positions that you would like to work.  I am the Competition Coordinator for the Nothers Fall Invitational.  At present, I am short on senior officials.  Please let me know NOW if you would like to try the jobs that go with the Senior Official clinics that you have been taking. To qualify, you must have the clinic before DOING the job.

Officials Clinics: The final four clinics prior to Nothers are now scheduled and signups are posted.  These are the last clinics in 2018 unless I schedule a Meet Manager or a Referee clinic.  Here are the upcoming clinics:

Chief Finish Judge/Chief Judge Electronics: Friday, November 9, 6:00 to 9:00 PM, CGAC, Pool Level Meeting Room, maximum enrolment 14 students.

Recorder/Scorer: Saturday, November 10, 7:00 to 9:00 AM, CGAC, Pool Level Meeting Room, maximum enrolment 14 students.

Starter (The person who says “Take your marks!”): Friday, November 16, 7:00 to 9:00 PM, CGAC, Pool Level Meeting Room, maximum enrolment 14 students.

Clerk of the Course: Saturday, November 17, 7:00 to 9:00 AM, CGAC, Pool Level Meeting Room, maximum enrolment 14 students.

Timing System Operator: This is one position that is learned by on the job training only.  This is a great job.  You are positioned looking right down the finish line, you don’t get wet, and it is interesting.  Yes, there is a computer involved, but if you can operate a cell phone, this is far less complex.  If you are interested in learning this job, email me to let me know.  This was the first officiating job that I tried, yes, at Nothers.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrollment and may be subject to change.

There is a session credit FAQ under the "Parent Info" tab under "Session Credits.
