THE COACHES REPORT

Some swimmers think that when they get to the swim meet they will magically "rise to the occasion", that the personal bests and great performances will magically appear. But what really happens? In the critical moment (the competition or the game) we fall back on our training. It is not at the meet where you have the magic moment, it is in practice, day after day after day, pushing yourself to a level of exertion and effort that will make your race effort seem familiar, like you’ve done it before, over and over again...because you have, in practice! If you want to do something you’ve never done before in a race (a pb, for example), you have to do things in practice that you’ve never done before. If you can do this on a consistent basis, not only will you go into your next competition fitter and faster, you’ll go into it with more confidence, and instead of “hoping” for the magic performance, you can confidently go after it because you have the memory (mental and muscle) and the knowledge of all of those past workout moments to "fall back on". How you swim in practice is how you’ll swim in the meet – success is about turning practice results into competition reality!

LAC Long Course Pentathlon

There were 190 LAC athletes who competed in the Long Course Pentathlon this past Sunday. At the Pentathlon, a high-point trophy is awarded to the athlete who competes and scores the highest combination of points in all 5 events. (Unfortunately, any swimmer who is disqualified in an event, is ineligible to win the high-point trophy.)

It was evident on deck that the swimmers were excited to compete for the trophy! Congratulations to our Pentathlon winners who will be given their trophies this week at work-out:

IT’S OFFICIAL!

LAC - Long Course Pentathlon – To ALL of our LAC officials and our visiting officials as well, what a nice smoothly run meet!  Great job everyone!  Special call out to first time Meet Manager John Malone.  Great job John!  We had lots of people trying new jobs.  Very exciting for those people.  You might have been new, but nobody noticed!  Lots of people got signoffs, including a bunch who did not realize it was happening.  24 people!  Special congrats to Sanny Huang on being our newest Level II official!  We have a lot of people getting close to new levels!

How to get to level 2? - It is easier than you think.  Take 5 clinics: Intro, safety marshal, Inspector of Turns, Stroke Judge, and 1 other clinic (other then the PARA and the Chief Recorder Clinics) and then do those 5 jobs until you feel comfortable with them.  Then tell me or the Referee that you are seeking a signoff, BEFORE the session.  Usually you will get a sign-off or rarely you will be given advice on how to improve.  You need 2 sign-off for timing, 2 for Inspector of turns, 1 for stroke judge, and 2 for that other clinic’s job and you are level 2.  It is easier than it sounds.  You are taking clinics anyway and helping at meets anyway.  Just work the jobs where you need the signoffs and ask for a signoff.  Simple!

2024 LAC-Hosted Meets:

May 10 - 12, 2024 - LAC - Hollandia Spring Invitational - *** I need senior official volunteers NOW *** Please email me with the sessions you can work and your preferred jobs if any.  I’d love to be able to get going on assignments.  There are 10 sessions.  Please put “Hollandia” in your email subject.

July 13 - 14, 2024 - LAC - Dr. Paul Hauch Invitational – you can volunteer for this one as well.  It is not too early, but my focus is on Hollandia.  If volunteering for Hauch, please put “Hauch” in your email subject.

Any More Clinics? – There will be a couple more.  I will schedule those after a short rest for me!

Clinics via eModule: Note that you can take some of the clinics as eModules.  I will not be doing live/zoom clinics again for those ones until the fall.  eModules allow you to take the clinics whenever it suits you.  If you go to Swim Ontario - Clinics there are instructions on how to take the online clinics.  The Zoom clinic presentations can be found online as well.  These are great for review but reading those does not count as taking the clinic.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings, L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]  Note: This is volunteer work for me, so I may not get back to you immediately but, if urgent, I can handle a reminder.

SWIM MEET VOLUNTEER SESSION CREDITS

Please note that high school students can get their volunteer credits for school as well as session credits for your swim family by helping out at our meets.

To check your session credit balance - log on to your LAC account on the website, go to "my account" and click the "service hours" tab to view your account summary. Any questions contact Donna at [email protected]

Our club has a long-standing policy regarding volunteer participation in our hosted swim meets, which includes the earning of mandatory session credits through working at our hosted swim meets.  The session credit policy can be found on the LAC website under the "parent info" tab under "LAC policy #2 - Club Hosted Meets and Session Credits".

Families of swimmers in Age Group and Senior are required to earn 22 session credits.

Families of returning Development swimmers are required to earn 11 session credits.

New families are not required to earn session credits but can transfer up to 5 session credits if they should decide to volunteer (which of course is encouraged and applauded).

Families with swimmers that have transferred from another team are considered returning swimmers and are subject to the session credit policy.

Any unworked session credits will be billed to your swimmer account at $40 per session at the end of the season.

The Session Credit Policy is under the constant scrutiny of the Board of Directors.
