THE COACHES REPORT

February Freestyle Time Trial

The February Freestyle Time Trial was a huge success for the LAC swimmers. The time trial had 46 swims that were first time events! The LAC Coaches saw skill advancements from swimmers at all levels and as a result, the time improvements were very impressive.

Congratulations to First Time Regional Qualifier Ali Askaraglu and Mathilde Weggaesser!

The Western Region Short Course Championships

Thank you to our meet management team for making it possible for our team to host this championship competition. There are many unseen hours behind the scenes that make these meets possible and we are fortunate to be able to host championship events in our home facility.

As a team LAC ranked 1st in team points at the competition with 1244.5 points, the second-place team scoring 730. The improvement percentage over the weekend was a solid 68%! Of the 98 competitors who represented LAC, 16 had a 100% improvement. The athletes raced aggressively in the prelim sessions to advance to the very competitive finals sessions. The coaches would like to congratulate Esther Lu for her 100 Butterfly race and Ewan Shearer for his 100 Backstroke race; both of these results are 15-17 Top 10 and Open top 10! And speaking of great Backstroke races, the LAC Coaches would like to congratulate Rowan Wick on re-qualifying for the OSC in the 200 Backstroke in a time of 2:08.00 with stroke rates that were 45-45-45-48 – those stroke rates are a textbook example of how to race the 200 backstroke.

Many swimmers requalified for the summer provincial championship season. We would like to extend a special congratulations to First Time Provincial qualifier Avery Buskard, Maclyn Sales, Quinlyn Sales, and Robert Zhou who earned their first provincial qualifying time for Festivals.

Ontario Swimming Championships

Coach Kelly and 16 Senior LAC swimmers will be heading to Scarborough this week to the Ontario Swimming Championships. This meet is the highest-level provincial competition and it will run Thursday February 29 to Sunday March 3. You can follow the excitement through meet mobile or via RecTek livestream.

GO LAC GO!

ALL TIDES SPIRITWEAR – Has now arrived!

You can pick up your spiritwear at CGAC Wed Feb 28 from 5:30 – 7:30 am, see Coach Liz. After that it will be distributed to the coaches for pick up.

THANK YOU FROM THE CANTEEN

THANK YOU to the DelaCruz family (Harina Bakery), the Lee family (Cupbop Sushi Plus) and Sherwood Forest Mall Tim Horton’s for their generous donations this past weekend’s Western Regional Championship.

WESTERN REGIONAL SPONSOR

London Aquatic Club would like to thank the Turner Family and the Finch Auto Group for your sponsorship of the Western Regional SC Championship swim meet this past weekend.

There was a lot of positive feedback from many of the parents about the banner and how "cool" it was having the car with all the graphics on it in our parking lot.

SWIM-A-THON APRIL

On behalf of the board and coaching staff we are excited to announce that our annual Swim-A-Thon campaign for the 2023-24 Swim Season has begun!

What is Swim-A-Thon: Swim-A-Thon is a national fundraiser for our sport. The fundraiser is a great team building event for swimmers at all stages of competitive swimming. At the end of the fundraising campaign, swimmers will be given the opportunity to complete as many lengths as they can (up to 200 lengths or 5KM). Development swimmers will have the opportunity to swim for one hour while our Age Group and Senior programs will swim for one and a half or two hours. IT’S OFFICIAL!

2024 Western Region SC Champs and February Freestyle Time Trial - Congratulations LAC Officials and Volunteers! - For hosting yet another great meet this past weekend!  There were lots of complements and you all own those too.

We tried something new for us with a management team.  It seemed to work well to me.  Great leadership from Alex Isings and Dmitrij Zagidulin!  The results were great!  We will be looking to do more of that going forward but probably aiming for 2 to 4 people.  Not enough work for 6 people.  One person on this team had more than enough work. Dmitrij Zagidulin was in charge of the meet database and the entries and those are big jobs with 27 teams and changing rules.  Dmitrij handled it all with an impressive coolness and professionalism.  The result speaks for itself!  Great job Dmitrij!  We also had the Time Trial with over 100 swimmers.  Great job on that one Meet Manager, Tracy Tolton, and mentor, Dmitrij Zagidulin!

Special thanks to all the committees and their leaders who carry a big part of the load for meet management!  Special thanks of course to Lisa Levy for feeding us so well.   The visitors had lots of great things to say about being overfed.  Thank you also to the minor officials crew.  We had massive gaping holes in the afternoon sessions and somehow, they magically filled those up!  Thank you officials coordinators!

A huge thanks to all the visiting officials who provided their expertise and personal touch to enrich the experience for all of us!

Welcome to the 2024 Long Course Season!  All Single Ended, all the Time!

April 14, 2024 - LAC - Long Course Pentathlon

May 10 - 12, 2024 - LAC - Hollandia Spring Invitational

July 13 - 14, 2024 - LAC - Dr. Paul Hauch Invitational

It is not too early to start offering to help as senior officials at these meets.  See my email below.  I intend to use a Sign-up tool going forward.  Expect to see that in next week’s newsletter.

You can also expect 1 final round of clinics, probably, not including the clinics that are available online unless someone needs to teach to get to level 3.

More details to come on that next week.  But for now, a short break!

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings, L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]  Note: This is volunteer work for me, so I may not get back to you immediately but, if urgent, I can handle a reminder.

SWIM MEET VOLUNTEER SESSION CREDITS

Please note that high school students can get their volunteer credits for school as well as session credits for your swim family by helping out at our meets.

To check your session credit balance - log on to your LAC account on the website, go to "my account" and click the "service hours" tab to view your account summary. Any questions contact Donna at [email protected]

Our club has a long-standing policy regarding volunteer participation in our hosted swim meets, which includes the earning of mandatory session credits through working at our hosted swim meets.  The session credit policy can be found on the LAC website under the "parent info" tab under "LAC policy #2 - Club Hosted Meets and Session Credits".

Families of swimmers in Age Group and Senior are required to earn 22 session credits.

Families of returning Development swimmers are required to earn 11 session credits.

New families are not required to earn session credits but can transfer up to 5 session credits if they should decide to volunteer (which of course is encouraged and applauded).

Families with swimmers that have transferred from another team are considered returning swimmers and are subject to the session credit policy.

Any unworked session credits will be billed to your swimmer account at $40 per session at the end of the season.

The Session Credit Policy is under the constant scrutiny of the Board of Directors.
