THE COACHES REPORT

Happy New Year to everyone!!

As we embark on the next cycle of the 2023-24 season, just a reminder that improvement in anything is only realistic and sustainable through regular, purposeful, and consistent practice. There are 3 sayings that come to mind in support of the above reality: 1)"90% of success is simply showing up." 2) "The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary." and 3) "it's not how hard you work that matters most...it's how you work hard."

As the LAC swimmers head to practice in the cold and dark days of January, remember these truths and use them as guide posts as you work toward your 2024 swimming goals.

LAC BURSARY PROGRAM – DEADLINE January 6th

The London Aquatic Club (LAC) was fortunate to receive $2295 from the London Community Foundation (LCF) to help member families who may need some financial support this swimming year. If you could use some financial assistance, please take a look at the Bursary Application.

The Club Manager will receive the applications via email to [email protected] or in a sealed envelope deposited in the LAC mailbox at CGAC. Identifying information will be removed and then the applications will be forwarded to the LAC Finance Committee for review.  All funds must be awarded for the 2023-24 swimming year.

Applications are open from December 7, 2023 -Jan 6, 2024 and communication of the results are anticipated the week of January 15, 2024.  Any bursary awarded will be in the form of a credit to the family LAC swim account.

JANSEN CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE

THANK YOU, LAC families! The numbers ballooned up to almost 1950 kids by the time everything was said and done this year. We could not do this without your help. The toys that you we were able to donate were amazing and went to some special kids across the city.

Thanks again, Jarth

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Happy New Year LAC Officials!  Let’s get back at it!

Next 2024 LAC-Hosted Short Course Meets:

January 20 - 21, 2024 - LAC - 12 & Under Celebration and January 20, 2024 - LAC - 13 & Over Time Trial - Now is the time to start offering to work senior jobs at these upcoming meets.  The 12 & Under Celebration may be double-ended (depending on entries) and we will need lots of officials for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.  If interested, email me ([email protected]) a separate email for each meet, with the name of the meet in the subject, and in the body, the people who will be helping, the jobs they would like, and the sessions that they would like to work at.  Jobs for minor officials will be posted on January 9.

February 23 - 25, 2024 - Western Region Short Course Champs – Thanks to those who have offered to help manage this meet.  I will be in contact in the next couple of days.  This should be great!   This meet has 5 sessions a day.  Double ended in the morning and afternoon (so 2 sessions each) and single ended for finals in the evening.  It is not too soon to make requests for senior positions. Minor official jobs will be posted February 13.

Clinics: I am going to start having another round of clinics.  They will all be done via Zoom.  The intention is to do all of the clinics before Regionals.  Sign-ups will be posted on the LAC web site.  Please do not sign up if you are not going to come.  If you sign up  circumstances change and you can no longer come, please remove your sign-up so someone else can attend.  A session credit is earned for each clinic that you take for the first time.  You can take a clinic as many times as you want but session credits are only given for the first time.  Here are the first 2 clinics:

  1. Wednesday, January 10 – Introduction to Swimming Officiating – 7:30 to 9:30 PM
  2. Thursday, January 11 – Inspector of Turns – 7:00 to 10:00 PM

Sign-ups to come shortly.

A few clinics are also available to take online as emodules which allows you to take them whenever it suits you.  If you go to Swim Ontario - Clinics there are instructions on how to take the online clinics.  A session credit is only given once for a particular clinic.  Live or as an emodule, not both.  The Zoom clinic presentations can be found online as well.  Great for review but reading those does not count as taking the clinic.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings, L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]  Note: This is volunteer work for me, so I may not get back to you immediately but, if urgent, I can handle a reminder.

SWIM MEET VOLUNTEER SESSION CREDITS

Please note that high school students can get their volunteer credits for school as well as session credits for your swim family by helping out at our meets.

To check your session credit balance - log on to your LAC account on the website, go to "my account" and click the "service hours" tab to view your account summary. Any questions contact Donna at [email protected]

Our club has a long-standing policy regarding volunteer participation in our hosted swim meets, which includes the earning of mandatory session credits through working at our hosted swim meets.  The session credit policy can be found on the LAC website under the "parent info" tab under "LAC policy #2 - Club Hosted Meets and Session Credits".

Families of swimmers in Age Group and Senior are required to earn 22 session credits.

Families of returning Development swimmers are required to earn 11 session credits.

New families are not required to earn session credits but can transfer up to 5 session credits if they should decide to volunteer (which of course is encouraged and applauded).

Families with swimmers that have transferred from another team are considered returning swimmers and are subject to the session credit policy.

Any unworked session credits will be billed to your swimmer account at $40 per session at the end of the season.

The Session Credit Policy is under the constant scrutiny of the Board of Directors.
