THE COACHES REPORT

As Coaches for the London Aquatic Club, we like to remind the swimmers that no matter what your goals are, and no matter how hard you work towards them in the pool, if you are neglecting the "invisible" skills, i.e., those habits that no one else can see, your hard work in pursuit of your goals may be in vain. Are you getting enough sleep (60hrs per week is recommended)? Are you keeping your fuel tank topped up by eating and drinking enough? Do you eat something before morning practice (after fasting for 8hrs or more while you sleep)? Are you eating again as soon after morning practice as possible, replenishing the carbohydrates lost during your 90min or 2 hour morning swim? Discipline is what we do when no one is watching - if you form good "invisible" skills in the areas of rest and recovery (sleep-nutrition-hydration), your results in the pool will be very "visible". PURPOSE POINTS US. PASSION PROPELS US.

Reminders: Parents and Family members viewing Practices:
Please remember that while you’re excited for your swimmer and eager for them to improve, it’s very important not to interfere in work-out. We ask that if you choose to spectate, you do so from upstairs and leave the interactions between coach and athlete- just that- between the coach and the athlete. Taking the athlete or coach’s attention away from work-out can have a negative impact on work-out for the entire Group.

Photos and Videos - Please note the City of London aquatic facility rule; “Please only take photos or videos of your immediate family.”
City of London Facility rule for phones and photographic devices: “In order to protect your personal privacy, The City of London prohibits the use of cellular phones and other photographic devices in recreation facility change rooms.”

Remaining 2023/24 LAC-Hosted Short Course Meets:

January 20 - 21, 2024 - LAC - 12 & Under Celebration

January 20, 2024 - LAC - 13 & Over Time Trial

February 23 - 25, 2024 – Western Region Short Course Championships

Thank You for Volunteering! We are looking pretty good.  There are some unfilled senior positions, but we will get by.  There is some opportunity for people to receive training on the timing system.  If anyone is interested, let me know ASAP. First come first serve.

Minor Officials: Sunday morning currently has 3 openings for Inspectors of Turns.  It is important that all of these positions are filled.  We have a lot of people trained.  There is no excuse for LAC having any minor official jobs unfilled.

About the Meets: Dress Code: Timers and Chief Timers, white shirts, everyone else, red shirts.  Everyone, black pants or dark solid-coloured shorts, clean footwear that can get wet.  When to arrive? Minor officials, at least 45 minutes before the racing starts.  Senior officials start of warmup.  Safety marshals, 15 minutes BEFORE the start of the warm-up. Everyone, check-in in the main-floor meeting room.  Everyone except safety marshals and Office staff be there in that room 30 minutes prior to the start of racing for the General Briefing.

About Sign-ups for Jobs, Clinics, anything . . . Please do not sign up if you are not going to attend and stay for the whole event.  If your circumstances change and you can no longer attend, please remove your sign-up to allow someone else to sign-up and so we can plan and find coverage if needed.

Registration of Officials/Volunteers: Even to just take a Zoom clinic, you are required to be registered as an Official.  When we see someone, who is not registered as an official, Sign-up for a clinic or to work at a meet, we create a new official account for you and an email is sent to you from [email protected]  If you have signed up for a clinic or a job and you are not a registered official then watch for the email, probably the next morning (keep tabs on your spam or junk folder too) and, when it comes, please read it and sign on and complete your registration.

Clinics: I am having another round of clinics.  They will all be done via Zoom.  The intention is to do all of the clinics before Regionals.  Sign-ups will be posted on the LAC web site.  A session credit is earned for each clinic that you take for the first time.  You can take a clinic as many times as you want but session credits are only given for the first time.  Here are the next clinics:

  1. Tuesday, January 16 - Introduction to Swimming Officiating – 7:00 to 9:30 PM
  2. Wednesday, January 17 – Judge of Strokes – 7:00 to 10:00 PM
  3. Monday, January 22 – Chief Timekeeper – 7:30 to 9:30 PM
  4. Wednesday, January 24 – Administrative Desk (formerly Clerk of the Course) 7:30 to 9:30 PM

A few clinics are also available to take online as emodules which allows you to take them whenever it suits you.  If you go to Swim Ontario - Clinics there are instructions on how to take the online clinics.  A session credit is only given once for a particular clinic.  Live or as an emodule, not both.  The Zoom clinic presentations can be found online as well.  Great for review but reading those does not count as taking the clinic.

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings, L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]  Note: This is volunteer work for me, so I may not get back to you immediately but, if urgent, I can handle a reminder.

SWIM MEET VOLUNTEER SESSION CREDITS

Please note that high school students can get their volunteer credits for school as well as session credits for your swim family by helping out at our meets.

To check your session credit balance - log on to your LAC account on the website, go to "my account" and click the "service hours" tab to view your account summary. Any questions contact Donna at [email protected]

Our club has a long-standing policy regarding volunteer participation in our hosted swim meets, which includes the earning of mandatory session credits through working at our hosted swim meets.  The session credit policy can be found on the LAC website under the "parent info" tab under "LAC policy #2 - Club Hosted Meets and Session Credits".

Families of swimmers in Age Group and Senior are required to earn 22 session credits.

Families of returning Development swimmers are required to earn 11 session credits.

New families are not required to earn session credits but can transfer up to 5 session credits if they should decide to volunteer (which of course is encouraged and applauded).

Families with swimmers that have transferred from another team are considered returning swimmers and are subject to the session credit policy.

Any unworked session credits will be billed to your swimmer account at $40 per session at the end of the season.

The Session Credit Policy is under the constant scrutiny of the Board of Directors.
