THE COACHES REPORT

Tomorrow I will be something. There is a tree in Japan, a conifer in the cypress family,  called the asunaro tree. It is very fragile when just a sapling, and must be carefully tended to and devotedly watered every day, otherwise it will die. This careful attention and devoted nurturing must happen every single day for FIVE YEARS before anything significant happens. The gardener, who understands that the journey is a long one, works like a carpenter in precisely watering the tiny and unresponsive tree, placing well-selected nutrients, in exacting amounts, into the soil around the base of the asunaro, and checking on it EVERY SINGLE DAY for FIVE YEARS.  Finally, so goes the legend, in the sixth year after its planting the asunaro tree springs forth from the ground and reaches a height of 40 metres and a trunk girth of 1.5 metres, all within the sixth year of its planting. The gardener must patiently do his job year after year before the results of his tremendous devotion, commitment and trust are realized. Translated from Japanese asunaro means: Tomorrow I will be something. What invisible skills are you carefully tending to and nurturing and "watering" every day so that perhaps someday they will be burst forth when no one had ever seen them? And when people ask: "Where did that come from?" you can tell them: "It came from tremendous commitment, devotion, trust and belief." (Secondary source: Andrew Craven, LAC Mentor Coach.)

The 7K Club – Congratulations to the following Swimmers for completing every meter of a recent Seven Kilometer practice session!! IT’S OFFICIAL!

2024 LAC-Hosted Long Course Meets:

April 14, 2024 - LAC - Long Course Pentathlon

May 10 - 12, 2024 - LAC - Hollandia Spring Invitational

July 13 - 14, 2024 - LAC - Dr. Paul Hauch Invitational

LAC - Long Course Pentathlon – Senior Officials – Job Assignments – Life got in the way, and there have been some dropouts, adjustments, and additional offers so the senior official assignments are not complete.  Sorry about that.  I will get them out ASAP.  Thank you to everyone who has volunteered.  There might now be a little room if interested, Timing System Operator, for example.

Pentathlon Minor Official jobs: will be posted on Tuesday April 2.  Thank you in advance for filling the sessions!

Last Round of Clinics for this Season:

Starter (the person who starts the races) – Thursday, April 4, 7:30 to 9:30 PM via Zoom

Chief Finish Judge / Chief Judge Electronics – Wednesday, April 10, 7:30 to 9:30 PM via Zoom

There will be a few more clinics after the Pentathlon and before Hollandia.

Clinics via eModule: Note that you can take some of the clinics as eModules.  I will not be doing live/zoom clinics again for those ones until the fall.  eModules allow you to take the clinics whenever it suits you.  If you go to Swim Ontario - Clinics there are instructions on how to take the online clinics.  The Zoom clinic presentations can be found online as well.  These are great for review but reading those does not count as taking the clinic.

Progressing as an Official: 1) Take clinics, 2) Get Experience, 3) Get signoffs/evaluations.  Very Easy.

  1. What are the Positions?
  2. What are the Clinics?
  3. What is Certification?
  4. What is an Evaluation?

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings, L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]  Note: This is volunteer work for me, so I may not get back to you immediately but, if urgent, I can handle a reminder.

SWIM MEET VOLUNTEER SESSION CREDITS

Please note that high school students can get their volunteer credits for school as well as session credits for your swim family by helping out at our meets.

To check your session credit balance - log on to your LAC account on the website, go to "my account" and click the "service hours" tab to view your account summary. Any questions contact Donna at [email protected]

Our club has a long-standing policy regarding volunteer participation in our hosted swim meets, which includes the earning of mandatory session credits through working at our hosted swim meets.  The session credit policy can be found on the LAC website under the "parent info" tab under "LAC policy #2 - Club Hosted Meets and Session Credits".

Families of swimmers in Age Group and Senior are required to earn 22 session credits.

Families of returning Development swimmers are required to earn 11 session credits.

New families are not required to earn session credits but can transfer up to 5 session credits if they should decide to volunteer (which of course is encouraged and applauded).

Families with swimmers that have transferred from another team are considered returning swimmers and are subject to the session credit policy.

Any unworked session credits will be billed to your swimmer account at $40 per session at the end of the season.

The Session Credit Policy is under the constant scrutiny of the Board of Directors.
