COACHES REPORT

Here is another excerpt from the Daniel Coyle book "The Little Book of Talent":

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A PRODIGY: Most of us grow up being taught that talent is an inheritance, like brown hair or blue eyes. Research shows that assumption to be FALSE. Early success turns out to be a weak predictor of long-term success. Many top performers are overlooked early on, then quietly, slowly but surely, grow into champions. This list includes Michael Jordan, Walt Disney, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Winston Churchill...arguably the greatest achievers in history in their chosen fields. Research has determined that the early praise and attention showered on young "superstars" often causes them to instinctively protect their "magical" status by taking fewer risks, which eventually slows learning. Talent is not something you have or don't have, it is something that is constructed slowly and patiently, day by day, week by week, month by month.

So, if you have early success, GREAT! But do your best to ignore the praise and keep pushing yourself to the edges of your ability, because that's where improvement happens. And, if you don't have early success, don't give up! Instead, treat your early efforts as experiments, not as verdicts. And remember, skill acquisition and mastery is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

IT’S OFFICIAL!

LAC Holiday Time Trial - December 15, 2018 - Senior Officials Needed – The next LAC hosted event needs your help.  If you would like to be a senior official at this Time Trial then please email me with “Holiday Time Trial” in the subject, and the position that you would like to work in the body of the email.  First come, first serve!  Many of our senior officials will be at Team Showdown so if you will NOT be there then be here helping LAC

Team ShowDown - December 14 - 16, 2018 – Be aware that there are no session credits for working at meets not hosted by LAC, but officiating at away meets can certainly beat sitting in the stands and you get to meet some new officials from other clubs.  Many of you will be there anyway so here is a message from the Team Showdown Competition Coordinator:

The Brantford Aquatic Club is in preparations to play host to LAC as well as to many others from around the province at this year's edition of Team Showdown at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre from December 14 - 16, 2018.

Please consider working on the pool deck with us in officiating in an exciting atmosphere as we see Ontario swimmers compete for points and top honours, If interested in officiating, please contact Crosby Gibson at [email protected] with your officiating credentials, session availability, as well as your desired position on the deck.

LAC 12 & Under Celebration and the January 13 and Over Time Trial – January 19 and 20, 2019 - Senior Officials Needed -  This will be our first meet of the New Year and will give people an opportunity to hone up their skills to help out at the WOSA Short Course Champs which follows two weeks later.  If you would like to help at one of these 3 sessions then please email the Competition Coordinator, Denise McDonald at [email protected] with “12 & Under“ in he subject and the session(s) and the positions that you are interested in in the body.

London Glider - Special Olympic Swim Meet! – Sunday, January 20, 2019 – 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM – Hopefully you will already be there for the Sunday session of the 12 and Under Celebration, but even if you are not, why not hang out at CGAC for the afternnoon and help out at this great meet.  If you are willing to help out in any officiating capacity, please contact Patrick Moran at [email protected] with the jobs that you are qualified for and willing to work at this meet.

WOSA Short Course Championship –January 31 to February 3, 2019 -  Senior Officials Needed – If you would like to be a senior official at the WOSA SC Champs that we are hosting this year then please email me with “WOSA” in the subject and the sessions and positions that you would like to work in the body of the email.  Really, is not too soon to start thinking about this meet!

Official Clinics – For those who are waiting to take the clinics that they missed in the last round, I will be hosting more clinics in the new year in support of the two 2019 meets listed above.

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrollment and may be subject to change.

The Session Credit Policies are posted under the “Parent Info" tab On the LAC website.
