COACHES REPORT
Welcome back everyone! The coaches sincerely hope you had an enjoyable and restful break, and are re-energized and re-focused on taking your swimming to an even higher level in 2019.  Many of you had some terrific results in the fall season and, as a result, need to re-set your goals for the remainder of the winter season. Hopefully you took some time to do this during your break. Others of you may have come up a bit short of where you hoped to be at the December championship meets...if you are in this boat do not be discouraged. Just as success breeds success, adversity and disappointment can also lead to success. In his book "The Tiny Book of Talent", Daniel Coyle talks about the idea of EMBRACING STRUGGLE. Coyle says: "At all of the talent hotbeds around the world I saw the same facial expression: eyes narrow, jaw tight, nostrils flared, the face of someone intently reaching for something, falling short, and reaching again. Deep, purposeful practice has a feeling that can be summed up in one word: STRUGGLE. Most of us instinctively avoid struggle, because it's uncomfortable. It feels like failure. However, when it comes to developing your talent, struggle isn't an option - it's a biological necessity. This is how evolution has built us. The struggle and frustration you feel at the edges of your abilities - that uncomfortable burn of "almost... almost" - is your brain making new neural connections, a phenomenon the experts call "DESIRABLE DIFFICULTY".

So, as you embark on a new swimming calendar year, with many exciting meets on the not-too-distant horizon, make it your resolution to challenge your perceived limits every day. This will certainly help you on a path to a higher level, in swimming and in life.

NHL ORIGINAL 6 HOCKEY GAME FUNDRAISING RAFFLE

One of our sponsors has once again presented us with an amazing opportunity to support our club by donating 4 Detroit Red Wing hockey tickets for us to raffle off. And these aren’t just any tickets, they are 4 centre ice club seats, 23 rows up and include an upscale buffet, all wine and beer, as well as free VIP parking. The game is February 26, 2019, against the Montreal Canadiens. The total ticket package has a $1500 value, with the raffle tickets costing only $10. The draw will take place during the finals at WOSA Regionals on February 2.

We are asking that each family sell a book of 5 tickets. These are some of the best seats in the house for an NHL Original Six game, so should be an easy sell - buy one or two for yourself and sell a few to friends - they’ll go pretty quick.  Books of tickets (5 per book) can be picked up this Saturday (Jan 12) at CGAC and at CHOCC during the morning practices. Any questions, or to arrange an alternate pick-up time, please contact Craig at [email protected].  Completed books and collected cash can be given to Craig or Donna, or simply dropped in the LAC mailbox in the foyer at CGAC. All tickets need to be sold with cash collected by Jan. 27.

Now the fun part – there will be a main prize of a Helly Hanson Swim Jacket for most tickets sold, PLUS an additional draw for other cool prizes – each book of 5 tickets sold earns one ticket in the prize draw. The more books you sell, the more chances to win! Thanks in advance for everyone’s help and good luck!

THANK YOU

To the parents who helped cook the waffles for the Age Group and Senior swimmers at CGAC on the Saturday before the break, the swimmers appreciated your efforts!

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrollment and may be subject to change.

The Session Credit Policies are posted under the “Parent Info" tab On the LAC website.
