COACHES REPORT

Here's a training reminder from SwimSwam contributor Olivier Leroy Poirier (YourSwimBook.com) on the importance of good technique: Take your foot off the gas! Going fast is great. Going fast is exhilarating. Going fast is just flat out fun! Balance that super swiftness with some slow, focus-based swimming where you are noticing your hand placement, your feel for the water, your body position, and any leaks in power. It’s hard to keep track of this stuff when you are driving through the water with all your might, so nail the details when your coach asks you to slow down...get the little things right and ramp up the speed from there!

How does this translate for us here at LAC? When you are doing stroke drills, try to do them with a maximum of focus and purpose. Ask yourself while you are drilling: "Why is this a drill?" And if you don't know the answer, ask your coach, if they haven't told you already. Your coach should have no trouble recognizing what drill you are doing when you have been given the choice. It is the swimmer who uses "drill" time to sharpen and hone and polish their technique, to think about their technique, who will realize small and sometimes almost imperceptible positive changes in technique and skill, and who will take another small step toward their goal. It's easy to swim hard, but it's hard to swim easy!

Finally, good luck to everyone racing this weekend at our 12&Under Celebration or in Toronto or at the Saturday night time trial...your first races of 2019!! A few reminders about proper competition protocols: 1) check in with your coach upon arrival, say "Hi coach! I'm here!" 2) warm up properly and with purpose, take your time, make sure you get out of the warm-up feeling warm, relaxed, and ready to go  3) check in with your coach before and after your race - your coach should be the last person you see for tactical or technical advice before you swim, and the first person you see after you swim to get feedback about your race  4) stay properly fueled (water bottle and light snacks)  5) wear your LAC uniform  6) HAVE FUN!

CONGRATULATIONS to our 6 swimmers who participated in a Regional Development camp in Guelph on Jan.5 (Lauren, Niamh, Amaris, Siporah, Jacob and Ewan) and to David Hickey who has been one of twelve swimmers selected from across Ontario to participate in a Florida training camp in February.

NHL ORIGINAL 6 HOCKEY GAME FUNDRAISING RAFFLE - TICKET SALES OFF TO  A ROARING START!

One of our sponsors has once again presented us with an amazing opportunity to support our club by donating 4 Detroit Red Wing hockey tickets for us to raffle off. And these aren’t just any tickets, they are 4 centre ice club seats, 23 rows up and include an upscale buffet, all wine and beer, as well as free VIP parking. The game is February 26, 2019, against the Montreal Canadiens. The total ticket package has a $1500 value, with the raffle tickets costing only $10. The draw will take place during the finals at WOSA Regionals on February 2.

We are asking that each family sell a book of 5 tickets. These are some of the best seats in the house for an NHL Original Six game, so should be an easy sell - buy one or two for yourself and sell a few to friends - they’ll go pretty quick.  Any questions, or to arrange ticket pick-up, please contact Craig at [email protected].  Completed books and collected cash can be given to Craig or Donna, or simply dropped in the LAC mailbox in the foyer at CGAC. All tickets need to be sold with cash collected by Jan. 27.

Now the fun part – there will be a main prize of a Helly Hanson Swim Jacket for most tickets sold, PLUS an additional draw for other cool prizes – each book of 5 tickets sold earns one ticket in the prize draw. The more books you sell, the more chances to win! Thanks in advance for everyone’s help and good luck!

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Thank you to Greg Lewis! - I hosted a “by invitation only” Referee Clinic this past Friday.  It was an excellent learning experience for the attendees.  Specials thanks to our guest facilitator Greg Lewis! Senior Officials  - LAC 12 & Under Celebration and the January 13 and Over Time Trial – January 19 and 20, 2019 – It sounds like we are staffed now but if you have taken a clinic and want to try the job with a mentor then do contact the Competition Coordinator, Denise McDonald at [email protected] with “12 & Under“ in the subject; and the session(s) and the position(s) that you are interested in working, in the body.

All Officials Needed - London Glider - Special Olympic Swim Meet! – Sunday, January 20, 2019 – 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM – Hopefully you will already be there for the Sunday session of the 12 and Under Celebration, but even if you are not, why not hang out at CGAC for the afternoon and help out at this great meet.  If you are willing to help in any officiating capacity, please contact Patrick Moran at [email protected] with the jobs that you are qualified for and willing to work at this meet.  This is a fine opportunity for getting those high school volunteer hours!Senior Officials Needed - WOSA Short Course Championship –January 31 to February 3, 2019 - If you would like to be a senior official at the WOSA SC Champs that we are hosting this year then please email me with “WOSA” in the subject and the sessions and positions that you would like to work in the body of the email.  I need to hear from now if you are willing to help!  I will be sending an email to the region this week seeking help.

Official Clinics – New clinics have been scheduled and sign-ups have been posted on the LAC web site.  An email was sent last week to the membership with much more detail.  If you did not get the email then check your spam folder.  One Session credit will be given to those taking a clinic for the first time.

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrollment and may be subject to change.

The Session Credit Policies are posted under the “Parent Info" tab On the LAC website.
