COACHES REPORT

GOOD LUCK to all swimmers racing this weekend in Etobicoke and Windsor. By this time of year every single one of you should have a very clear race day routine - how much sleep you get, what you eat, how you warm-up, the music you listen to, what you do in the last 5 minutes before you race. Many of you have at least one more championship opportunity this year - use this weekend to practice championship habits!

Olivier Poirier Leroy talks about a book called The Power of Habit that outlines the race day routine that Michael Phelps used during his remarkable 8-gold medal winning performance in Beijing in 2008. To fuel himself for the grueling days of competition, Phelps started off each day eating the same race-day breakfast of eggs, oatmeal and four energy shakes.  When he arrived at the pool he would do the same well-worn stretching routine -  arms, back, chest, ankles, hamstrings - he’d target each systematically, checking them off one by one.  His water warm-up was the same each day, and not that different from what most of us mortals do in our own meet warm-up: 800 swim, mixing it up; 600 kick to get his legs warm; 400 pull; 200 drill. And then a series of 25s at race pace to wake up his nervous system and get his fast twitch muscles primed. After that he was out of the water, wrestling himself into his racing suit. Strapped to his head were his headphones blasting his choice tunes of the day.

The approach was simple—maybe not as complicated or as crazy as we’d imagine from the GOAT—but it’s purpose was clear: to give Phelps a sense of control. By having a set procedure to follow he could box out what was happening around him and focus solely on executing his best possible performance. It’s hard to imagine what the pressure cauldron would have been like on that stage. Combine that with Phelps being a hyperactive and anxious child, and you can see how this could have gone far differently. His long-time coach Bob Bowman, having recognized the talent inherent in the gangly kid from Baltimore a decade earlier, knew that strong mental habits would be the real game changer for Phelps.

OK LAC'ers, what is YOUR race day routine? What has worked for you in the past? What hasn't? Use this weekend to establish and/or practice great competition routines and habits. The uniform rotation is Friday NAVY - Saturday ORANGE - Sunday ROYAL. Besides practicing great competition routines, practice being a GREAT teammate! Be POSITIVE and be PROUD! GO LAC GO!

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Dr. Paul Hauch Invitational (July 6 and 7) – Looking for Senior Officials:  Hi everyone!  I have had 2 people offer to help as senior officials so far.  I am going to need a few more!  If you are interested then please let me know now so that you are sure to get the job that you want.  The Hauch meet has been reduced to two days this year with the 12 & Under sessions in the mornings and the 13 & Over sessions in the afternoons.  Mark your calendars and send me an email now if you would like to be a senior official at this meet.  This meet also has a need for some unique help with things like parking attendants BBQers, runners, bell prize committees, etc. so, if officiating is not your preference, we will have other opportunities available as well.  Make sure you come out and help.  This is not a big commitment and it’s a fun way to end the season for most of our swimmers!

Session 2019-2020 – Meet Managers!:  Yes, it is that time of year already where we start to look ahead to next season.  The coaches are already booking pool time for the events that we will be hosting next year.  Almost as urgent as booking that time is making sure that we have Meet Managers lined up to organize all of the things associated with the running of one of these events.  If you have an interest, or just want to learn more, please email me, and we can discuss.  I have already had some people step up for next year, but not enough and ideally we can have at least 2 Meet Managers for each of the Invitationals and any larger meets that we may be selected to host.  Do not be afraid.  Most of our new meet managers come in as level 1 or 2 officials.  We have a great support system for new meet managers and awesome committees that pretty much run themselves!  There is a learning curve but we have a number of teachers to help with that!  Send me that email now!

If you have any officiating questions please contact me, Mark Lukings L.A.C. Co-Club Officials Chair at [email protected]

LAC SESSION CREDITS

Club hosted meets help to reduce membership fees by 20-25% as well as reducing travel costs by attending fewer out-of-town meets. To ensure the Club has sufficient resources to host meets, most LAC swim families are required to work a minimum of 22 sessionsduring club hosted meets (please see below for exceptions). These sessions may be worked through officiating or working at the club’s food canteen, awards or other positions. Any unfulfilled session credits will be billed at a rate of $40.00 per session to the swim family’s Swimmer Account at the end of the season. If a swimmer leaves the club after March 1st then the prorated unworked session credits will be billed to their final statement. Please note that this is not meant to be a “fundraiser” but rather an incentive to participate in the running of home meets. Swim families may receive up to 5 donated session credits from another club family to complete their credits, however any more than the 5 donated session credits must be approved by the board. Session commitments are waived for first year swim families with no prior competitive swim club affiliation, as well as for introductory and post-secondary students training full time with the club and for varsity swimmers, although assistance during swim meets from these groups is greatly appreciated.  First year families ARE required to fulfill the LAC orientation program. This includes participating in an Introductory to Swimming clinic during the swim season and a follow up “on-deck” mentoring session.

*** Families of Development swimmers who are not in their first year of competitive swimming who do not have a swimmer in another level are required to fulfill only 11 of the assigned session credits.***

*The number of session credits will be reviewed by the board in the fall upon club enrollment and may be subject to change.

The Session Credit Policies are posted under the “Parent Info" tab On the LAC website.
