COACHES REPORT

FADING vs FAILING (Pt.II) - by Olivier Poirier Leroy

Is it a fade or a fail?  Think back to the last time you went ALL-IN on a swimming goal and failed. Not just all-in with wishful thinking, but really, truly all-in, with deliberate, consistent, tireless action. You fully committed to the program. Showed up to every practice you could (plus a couple extra for good measure). Ate like a champion. Left nothing to chance. Race day comes around, and the race of your dreams turns into the race of your nightmares. Whether it’s getting DQ’d, letting self-doubt creep in at the last moment, or getting injured on race day, you got slapped upside the head by the worst possible thing that could happen to your performance. Reflecting on that failure, it stings, right? We have all been there. But it didn’t destroy you. At all. And, if anything, there are some things you took from that big old failure that strengthened you.

Maybe the failure made you so mad that you doubled down on your commitment moving forward.  Maybe you realized that you are way more resilient than you give yourself credit for.  Maybe, for the first time, you got a clear idea of just how much work is going to be required to crack your PBs like a stale cracker. All things you can never truly appreciate and understand without having walked the path yourself.

Contrast this to the times where you fizzled out on your goals. When your effort quietly whimpered off into the dark. What did you learn from that? Did you come back better prepared? More motivated? Or did you steadily learn the habit of half-stepping your goals?

We are not saying the goal is to purposely fail. The point isn’t to be a spectacular failure. Success is what we are after. All day. The plan revolves around crushing your PBs, winning gold, taking down records, putting up championship banners, etcetera. You WANT to achieve the big, greasy goals you have for yourself in the water. But you can’t come to terms with the work required to be successful without being okay with the risk of failure. Success of any kind comes pre-packaged with the considerable chance of failing.

This seems like an easy concept, but think about the times you self-sabotaged your training, lifestyle habits, nutrition, or mindset because you struggled with the thought that you might fail. Get comfortable with the thought you might fail, and that you are going to be okay even if it happens, and that you are better off in every way imaginable to properly fail (if it comes to that). And while most swimmers will say that they understand this (“I know, I know”), they still seemingly go out of their way to find ways to fizzle and fade instead of risking failure.

So…when putting together an action plan for your goals this season, and looking at the work required to achieve it, and the customary ups and downs your season is guaranteed to include, it’s worth remembering:  1)chasing excellence means committing to the risk of failure 2)better to fail than to fade 3)true and proper failures set you up for future great achievements!  Just ask Zack Chetrat!

IT’S OFFICIAL!

Fall Time Trial – November 9 – Thank you for stepping up!  – I am sorry that I could not use all of you!  Do not be concerned.  We have 6 more meets, most with multiple sessions.  For example Nothers has 18 tank sessions.. That’s 144 senior officials needed for Nothers.  The two first tine trials have two sessions in total for 12 senior officials.

Nothers Fall Invitational – Senior Officials Needed!  As mentioned above, I have 18 tank sessions to staff.  I need a lot of people.  So far I do not have many.  If you have taken the clinic and would like to work one or more senior position at Nothers, please email me.  I need ‘Nothers’ in the subject, the session(s) you can work, and the job(s) you would like to have.  Minor official jobs will be posted next week.  If you are waiting to hear from me on Senior official jobs then go ahead and select Minor Official slots and when I get back to you, if you have a job with me, then you can remove the sign-up for that session. Senior Officials are Stroke Judges (154), Clerk of Course (51), Chief Timekeeper (43), Chief Finish Judge (31), Recorder/Scorer (44) and Starter (44).  The numbers in the brackets beside the positions are the number of LAC Officials on file who have taken the clinic.  I should not have to seek outside help, but I will be doing that on Thursday.  First come, first serve plays big role in who gets the jobs.  If you are new, tell me that and I will try to get you a mentor.

Clinics – There are still 3 clinics to go.  Please see below for dates of the remaining clinics prior to Nothers.  Sign-ups are on the LAC Home Page.  More clinics will be offered later.  Everyone is welcome to sign-up but session credits are only given the FIRST time you take each clinic.  We have records going back years.  Still, if you want a refresher, feel free.  Please do not sign up if you are NOT going to attend.  Clinics can be taken in any order but ideally the Introduction clinic is taken early.

If you would like to see a brief summary of what these jobs are then log into the LAC website and then click on this link: https://www.teamunify.com/SubTabGeneric.jsp?team=canlac&_stabid_=114217
