Coaching Staff

Norm Collins

Director

Coach Collins is in his 37th year in education.  His teaching specialty is physics.  He began teaching in Alamo Heights in 1992.  He coached swimming, diving, and water polo for 10 years and established the Alamo Heights aquatic center in 1993.  He brought water polo back to Alamo Heights in 1994.  During that time, he coached several All-Americans and All-Staters in both swimming and water polo.  His girls finished as high as 4th in the state in the UIL swimming and diving championships and 3rd in the state at the TISCA water polo championship.

Coach Collins was also a water polo assistant coach for the national youth boys team ages 16-17 in the late 90s. During the summer of 2023, he coached the AAAA Ducks 18&U boys to a 3rd place finish in the Junior Olympics held in North Texas.  In 2020 his high school boys swimming and diving team placed 3rd in the state and his 2021 girls placed 4th at state. In 2022, the boys placed 5th. In 2022, the inaugural year of UIL water polo, the girls and boys teams both made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs. In the 2023 playoffs, both teams made it to the 4th round.

Coach Collins ran track and field and played basketball in high school (Idabel, OK) where he set the school record in the high jump of 6 '7".  He high jumped and long jumped at Oklahoma State.  He first coached track & field and football in Carrollton, Texas after graduating from Oklahoma State in 1985 with his bachelors in science education and 1989 with his Masters in Education Administration.  At Alamo Heights, Coach Collins has been the high school swimming and diving coach, water polo coach, track and field coach, club swim coach, science teacher (physics), science department chair, assistant principal, and interim athletic director.  He is currently the aquatic coordinator for the district and the head coach for swimming and water polo.

Coach Collins has a wife Nancy, a son Kelly, and a stepson James, a cat named Bonnie and two dogs Harry and Potter.  His family is his greatest love.

Scott Harris

18U & 16U Girls and Boys Head Coach

Coach Scott Harris is an Eagle Scout, and earned a B.A. in History/Psychology from Texas State University in 1990. There, he played water polo for the university for one year, as well as being a key point scorer on the university cycling team, which won back-to-back South Central Conference Championships (Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas). He earned an M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership from Lamar University in 2009.

Harris coached swimming and water polo for 12 years at Judson High School, where his favorite team to compete against was Alamo Heights led by Coach Norm Collins. In 2002, Harris moved to Ronald Reagan High School, coaching swimming there for the next six years. Overall, Harris was a 7x District Coach of the Year, and once Regional Coach of the Year, producing: 7 District Champion swim teams, 3 Regional Champion swim teams and 2 Regional Champion teams in water polo. He was twice selected to coach the T.I.S.C.A. All-Star water polo team. Additionally, his teams produced 192 lettermen, 52 All-State athletes in Swimming, Diving & Water Polo, 65  All-Americans in Swimming & Diving, 6 Water Polo All-Americans, 28 Academic All-Americans, 4 Individual Swimming State Champions, 1 Mexican National age-group record, 5 swimmers with Olympic Trials cuts, and 1 Olympian.

Harris retired from coaching in 2008 to help his wife raise their two sons. Still teaching at Reagan, he begins his 35th year this fall, having taught World History, U.S. History, and International Baccalaureate’s Theory of Knowledge, he is currently teaching four courses: A.P. Macroeconomics, A.P. Psychology, Philosophy, and ‘Ethics, Economy, & Entrepreneurship.’

By 2021, Harris’ sons were 14 and 18 -- and therefore too cool to hang out with dad -- so he came out of coaching retirement to help build the AAAA Water Polo team with Joe Linehan and Norm Collins. Harris has coached 14u/16u/18u boys & girls, and for the past two years, specifically the 18u/16u girls. He is the Athlete Safety Officer for AAAA water polo club, and referees the high school water polo (87 games last season), and has taught referee clinics.

Harris is also a consultant to the Free to Choose Network, and an associate producer for izzit.org, both of which produce videos for PBS and high school classrooms advocating economic education, personal liberty, and the ethical pursuit of happiness. His wife of 27 years, Jeska, somehow tolerates all of this.
