1. Words from Coach Mark

Freestyle Swimming: Tips on Breathing, Extension, and Timing

Breathing Technique: Begin exhaling gently and continuously as soon as you finish inhaling—think of a soft hum. Keep a bit of air in reserve; avoid forcefully expelling all your breath. This “suck and tuck” approach can lead to a quicker depletion of air.

Proper Timing: Ensure you’re not holding your breath until the moment you inhale. This habit can leave you scrambling for air. Instead, maintain a steady exhale underwater so you’re ready to breathe in fresh air seamlessl

Arm Extension: Stretch your forearm forward, maintaining a slight downward tilt to prevent your elbows from dropping. However, be mindful to extend just beyond shoulder width. Aim for a wide reach towards the pool’s end, but be cautious not to let your hand cross your head’s midpoint.

Avoiding Zigzagging: While extending across may feel like moving forward, it can actually send you on a zigzag course. Pay attention to your arm’s tendency to drift inward as you breathe and turn your head down.

Emphasizing a Wide Entry: You might need to accentuate a wider hand entry into the water, which could feel unbalanced. After entry, allow for a brief moment of stillness (as you reach) before starting your pull.

Maintaining Forward Momentum: Even if it feels like you’re decelerating during the glide and not pulling immediately, you’re still propelling forward. This technique helps reduce your stroke rate, enhances efficiency, elongates your body, and let’s surface bubbles dissipate before you pull. As your pace and speed pick up, this pause will naturally diminish.

Wishing you all the best—go make a splash!

2. Perfect Streamlines

Streamline position is the most important technique you need to learn if you are trying to get better at swimming. It is the foundation of the sport.

The benefits of learning proper streamline are endless.

Here are the four key reasons a streamlined position is so important:

1.  Streamline position produces the least amount of drag in the water

2.  Streamline position teaches you how to hold proper body position as you swim your full stroke

3.  Streamline position teaches you how to connect your kick to your core

4.  Streamline position shows you where you might be lacking the necessary mobility and flexibility to progress in swimming

7 Key Points for the Perfect Streamline

1.  Wrists/hands overlapped with thumb hooked.

2.  Biceps squeezing the ears There should be no space between your biceps and your head to achieve the perfect streamline.

3.  Shoulders flexed to form a straight line with the torso and legs (not angled forward).

4.  Trunk neutral. No rounding or excess arching. Some arching in the low back is acceptable as the spine does have a natural curvature. The arch should not increase beyond your normal resting posture.

5.  Tuck your chin down to your chest, while keeping the back of your head in line with your neck. This will help minimize the space between your chin and chest—avoiding creating any extra drag pockets.

6.  Legs fully extended and held closely together.

7.  Toes pointed.  This is the MOST common mistake in streamlining.  Most swimmers are concerned about what their upper body is doing and often forget their lower body.

When you are in a streamline, it’s very important to point your toes to avoid excess drag if your feet are relaxed.

This is one of the EASIEST ways to speed up your streamlines and it isn’t that hard to do!
