4. Words from Coach Mark
Dear Team,
Balance and balance drills are crucial in both competitive and fitness swimming for several reasons:
- Efficiency and Speed: Proper balance in the water reduces drag, allowing you to move more efficiently and quickly. When you maintain a streamlined position, it can glide through the water with less resistance.
- Technique Refinement: Balance drills help you focus on specific aspects of your stroke, such as body position and alignment. This targeted practice refines technique, leading to more effective and powerful strokes.
- Muscle Memory Development: Repetition of balance drills helps build muscle memory, ensuring that the correct movements become automatic. This is particularly important during races or long swims when fatigue can affect form.
- Proprioception: Balance drills enhance your awareness of your body position in the water. This improved proprioception allows for better. Control and precision, enable you to make real-time adjustments to your strokes.
- Injury Prevention: By emphasizing proper technique and body alignment, balance drills help prevent injuries. When you consistently practice these drills, you are less likely to develop overuse injuries caused by poor form.
- Mental Focus and Discipline: Performing balance drills requires concentration and discipline. This mental engagement fosters a disciplined mindset, which is crucial for success in competitive swimming
Here are some effective balance drills to improve your swimming technique:
Torpedo Drill: This drill helps you maintain a streamlined body position. Push off the wall with your arms extended in front of you, head down, and body straight. Focus on keeping your hips and legs at the surface of the water.
Kick on Side Drill: Lie on your side with one arm extended in front and the other by your side. Kick gently while keeping your body aligned. This drill enhances your balance and body rotation.
Single Arm Freestyle Drill: Swim freestyle using only one arm while the other remains by your side. This drill helps you focus on body rotation and balance. Alternate arms every 25 meters.
Closed Fist Drill: Swim freestyle with your hands in fists. This reduces the surface area of your hands, forcing you to rely on body position and balance to move efficiently through the water1.Superman Drill: Float on your stomach with your arms extended in front and legs straight. Focus on keeping your body horizontal and balanced. This drill helps you find the right body position for efficient swimming.
Head-Lead Balance Drill: Swim with your arms at your sides and lead with your head. Keep your head in a neutral position and focus on maintaining a horizontal body position. This drill improves your awareness of body alignment.
Incorporating these drills into your swim practice can significantly enhance your balance, leading to better efficiency and performance in the water.
