5. WORDS FROM COACH MARK

The Art of Sculling in Swimming

Sculling is a fundamental swimming technique involving moving your hands in specific patterns to create propulsion and maintain balance in the water. This technique helps you develop a better feel for the water, enhancing your ability to apply pressure effectively during strokes. Sculling is performed using a figure-eight motion with the hands, which can be done in various positions, such as face down, on the back, or in a vertical position

Benefits of Sculling:

  • Improves Hand Position: Helps perfect the catch phase of strokes by teaching you to anchor your hands in the water
  • Enhances Water Sensitivity: Develops your ability to feel and manipulate water pressure
  • Injury Prevention: Provides a low-impact way to continue training while recovering from injuries

Best Drills

Here are some effective sculling drills to improve swimming technique:

  1. Front Scull: Performed with your face down, arms extended in front, and hands moving in a sweeping motion to create propulsion
  2. Mid Scull: Done with the arms bent at the elbows, hands positioned under the chest, and sculling motion focused on maintaining balance and control
  3. Back Scull: Swimmer lies on their back with arms extended by their sides, using a sculling motion to move backward
  4. Vertical Scull: Remaining upright in the water, using a sculling motion with hands to stay afloat and maintain position
  5. Head-First Scull: Done face forward with hands in front, using a sculling motion to move head-first through the water
  6. Feet-First Scull: Performed face backward with hands by the hips, using a sculling motion to move feet-first through the water

These drills will be incorporated into our regular swim workouts to enhance technique, efficiency, and overall performance.
