4. WORDS FROM COACH MARK

The Importance of Descending Your Speed During a Workout Set

Descending swims in your training offers significant benefits for you by enhancing your pacing skills, endurance, mental toughness, and physiological efficiency.
By practicing controlled increases in speed, you learn to manage your energy effectively, preventing early fatigue while ensuring a strong finish in races.
Descending sets in workouts also build endurance by gradually intensifying effort, strengthening your ability to sustain speed even when tired.
Additionally, descending sets foster mental resilience, teaching you to push harder as fatigue sets in. The gradual progression of speed builds confidence and patience, crucial for maintaining composure in competition. Physiologically, starting at a slower pace allows the aerobic system to warm up efficiently, helping to keep lactate levels lower for better performance.
Moreover, these workouts, when done properly, provide clear, objective feedback on progress, enabling you to track improvements and refine your strategy.
Ultimately, descending swims develop both the physical and mental aspects needed for optimal race performance, improved fitness, ensuring you can pace yourself strategically, and finish strong.
See you at the pool,
Coach Mark
