5. WORD FROM COACH MARK

Helpful Terminology for Masters Swimmers

Many swimming terms are universal, and some are specific to MVN. Here are some you might hear on deck. If you are new to swimming or MVN, familiarize yourself with these terms and feel free to ask the coaches for clarification.

Circle Swim
When two or more swimmers share a lane, everyone swims in a circular pattern, typically keeping to the right side of the lane. Swim down on the right, return on the opposite right side.

Cool Down
This is the last part of the workout, but it is very important, especially if you have been sprinting or raising your heart rate. The cool down is a recovery set that allows the lactic acid built up in your muscles to dissipate. Cooling down properly helps avoid muscle soreness.

Descend
Swimming each repeat in a set faster than the one before.
Example: Descend 3×100 means each 100-yard swim should be faster than the last.

Build
Often confused with Descend, Build has a distinct meaning. Each swim starts slow and ends fast. You build your speed throughout the swim. i.e., 4 x 50 Build means that each 50 starts easy and gradually builds to fast by the end. Each of the 4 swims is performed in the same slow-to-fast order.

Interval
The total time allowed for each swim, including both swimming and rest.
Example: 100s on a 1:30 interval means you start a new 100 every 1 minute and 30 seconds.

LCM (Long Course Meters)
A 50-meter pool is used in competitions.
The Long Course season in USMS runs from May to August, ending with the Long Course Nationals.

LMSC (Local Masters Swim Committee)
The regional governing body of US Masters Swimming.
We belong to the Southern Pacific LMSC, covering Southern California and parts of Nevada, with around 4,700 members.

Nationals
The USMS National Championship Swim Meets are held twice a year:

Short Course Nationals in May
Long Course Nationals in August

Negative Split
Swimming the second half of a race faster than the first.
Example: In a 100-yard swim, the last 50 yards are faster than the first 50.

Open Water
Races held in natural bodies of water like lakes, rivers, or oceans—usually over longer distances than pool events.

Postal/Virtual  Swim
A competition where you swim at your home pool, then submit your results to be ranked against others doing the same event.

Pulling
An exercise that uses just your arms. This usually involves putting a pull buoy between your legs. Your feet should remain immobile. It is recommended to strap your feet together with a band to prevent kicking with a pull buoy, something that not only diminishes the positive benefits of a pulling set, but can negatively impact your kicking mechanics.

Short Course
Pools that are either 25 yards (SCY) or 25 meters (SCM) in length.
See below for more on SCY and SCM.

SCM (Short Course Meters)
Competitions are held in 25-meter pools.
Part of the Short Course season (September–May), ending with Short Course Nationals in May.

SCY (Short Course Yards)
Competitions are held in 25-yard pools.
Also part of the Short Course season (September–May), ending with Short Course Nationals in May.

Seed Time
Your estimated best time for an event, used to place you in heats with swimmers of similar ability.

Splits
The time for each segment of a race.
Example: A 200-yard swim has four 50-yard splits that add up to your total time.

Taper
A reduction in training intensity before a major competition allows for recovery and peak performance. Usually lasts about two weeks.

Top Ten
The 10 fastest times recorded nationally in each event and age group during the year.
MVN TOP TOP TEN RESULTS

Zone
A regional division of USMS made up of several LMSCs.
We are in the Southwest Zone, which includes:

  • Arizona LMSC
  • New Mexico LMSC
  • San Diego-Imperial LMSC
  • Southern Pacific Masters Association (SPMA)
