Words from Coach Mark

Hey team! When you step up on the blocks for a freestyle race, it’s not just about swimming fast — it’s about swimming smart.

Here are some  race strategies crucial to your success:

Freestyle Race Strategies

50 Freestyle:

  1. Legs initiate speed…the faster kick you have, the quicker arms will cycle = faster swim

  2. Head tilt should be 5-10 degrees higher than aerobic training level.

  3. The execution of the turn must be PERFECT.

  4. Execution of the breakout must be flawless (keep the momentum of the turn going into your swim)

  5. Recommended breathing: NEVER BREATHE in or out of your turn walls; that goes for the finish as well. Plan your breathing pattern; it should be subconscious. Your focus is to reach the wall first, not to breathe.

  6. FINISH ON YOUR SIDE, HEAD DOWN.

100 Freestyle:

  1. Same as the 50 Freestyle, and in addition:

    1. First 50 should be controlled (breathing pattern is normal, flawless turns, longer but FAST strike)

    2. Your “Legs are your Reinforcements.” You will need them in the end. Use them through the race, but do not trash them too early.

    3. The race is determined by the last 10 meters…make sure you have set yourself up for a good finish.

200 Freestyle:

  1. 50 Controlled, legs are at a 6 best rhythm, 50 Solid, 50 Down Hill, 50 FINISH.

  2. PERFECT….long streamlines.

  3. This race is determined by the last 25 meters and who has the BEST TURNS.

400 Freestyle:

  1. 100 Controlled, 100 Solid, 100 Make Your Move, 100 Down Hill, 100 FINISH.

  2. Your legs will keep you in check on your ability to perform well. Use them at the right time to boost.

  3. DO NOT PROTECT YOURSELF…this race should hurt the last 50 meters.

  4. The faster the turn you have, the faster the swim you will have.

1500 Freestyle:

  1. 500 Controlled, 400 Solid, 300 Make Your Move, 200 Down Hill, 100 FINISH.

  2. Own the race from start to finish.

  3. Rely on the “Second Wind”: effect (if you believe in it, it will happen.)

  4. Legs should be used to keep tempo in check; more importantly, they should be used primarily to execute perfect turns and long, perfect streamlines.

  5. Whoever can control their breathing, turns, and tempo will have their best time.

When you’ve practiced your strategy in training, you’ll feel more confident on race day. You’ll trust your plan, your training, and your ability to execute.
