Friday Swim Tip: What Sculling Is — And Why We Do It

Sculling is one of the most effective skill-building drills in swimming. It’s all about small, controlled hand and forearm movements that create lift and propulsion — helping you develop a better “feel for the water.”

What Sculling Actually Is:

  • Small figure-eight or sweeping motions with your hands
  • Changing palm angles to generate lift
  • Using forearms as paddles for more surface area
  • Maintaining a stable body position
  • Building sensitivity to water pressure and flow

Why We Do It:

  • Improves catch mechanics for all strokes
  • Enhances propulsion efficiency
  • Strengthens forearm engagement
  • Boosts body awareness and alignment
  • Transfers to freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly
  • Refines hand positioning for speed and control

The Big Picture:
Sculling teaches you to shape the water, not fight it. This skill makes every stroke more efficient and every lap smoother.

Have a great weekend, Team!
See you at the party tonight and on deck tomorrow for Polar Bear!

“Commitment is what turns a promise into reality. It’s the daily choice to show up, work hard, and push beyond comfort — even when no one is watching.”
