2026 Goals
SMARTER Swimming Goals
Set goals that are:
• Specific – “Improve my backstroke finish”
• Measurable – “Execute strong finishes without looking around”
• Agreed – Collaborate with your coach
• Realistic – Break big goals into steps
• Time-Bound – Set deadlines
• Evaluate – Adjust as needed
• Recorded – Use a swim log or journal
Takeaways:
• Break big goals into mini milestones
• Reset when off-track
• Use goals for rehab and recovery
• Build confidence through small wins
Applying Goal Setting to Training
• Start with purpose – Define your “why”
• Layer your goals – Combine performance + process
• Make goals visible – Post on deck, share in newsletters, discuss in huddles
Examples - Short-Term Goals
• Attend all practices this week
• Nail 3 dolphin kicks off each wall in backstroke
• Log swim times after each workout
Examples - Long-Term Goals
• Compete in a regional meet in 6 months
• Swim 5,000 yards continuously by year-end
• Mentor a newer swimmer to build team culture
Strategy: Use short-term goals as checkpoints. Celebrate small wins to stay motivated.
Seven Tips to Success
1. Set meaningful goals – Connect training to a deeper purpose
2. Make goals realistic and exciting – Stretch without overwhelming
3. Write them down – Give each swim a sense of purpose
4. Keep a logbook – Track progress and celebrate wins
5. Make it fun – Play with drills, try new strokes, swim relays
6. Train with winners – Surround yourself with positive energy
7. Celebrate progress – Reflect on how far you’ve come

Have a great weekend, Team!
