More Drills from Coach Mark

Fingertip Drag Drill

During freestyle, lightly drag your fingertips across the surface of the water as your arm recovers forward. The goal is a high‑elbow recovery, a relaxed arm, and a smooth, controlled shoulder rotation.

Why we use it: This drill trains you to keep a strong, efficient recovery path. By keeping your fingertips in contact with the surface, you naturally lift the elbow, improve body balance, and build awareness of proper freestyle mechanics. Over time, this leads to a cleaner, more efficient stroke and better alignment in the water.

Alternating Fly/Breast Drill

This drill is exactly what it sounds like: one full butterfly stroke, followed by one full breaststroke, repeated down the pool. The key is rhythm. Let the dolphin‑like undulation of breaststroke carry into your butterfly stroke so your whole body—shoulders through hips—moves as one connected unit.

Why we use it: Alternating Fly/Breast helps you find the ideal body position for both strokes. It teaches you to lift the hips, maintain forward momentum, and hold a longer, more powerful glide. When your hips stay high, your stroke becomes smoother, faster, and far more efficient.
