WORDS FROM COACH MARK
KICKING is often underestimated in Masters swimming, but it plays a critical role in overall efficiency and speed. Here’s a breakdown:
Why Is Kick Important in Masters Swimming?
- Balance & Body Position:
A strong, consistent kick helps maintain a streamlined position, reducing drag and keeping hips high in the water. - Propulsion:
While kick contributes less to speed than the pull in freestyle (roughly 10–15% for most swimmers), it’s still essential for sprinting and maintaining rhythm. - Timing & Rhythm:
Kick sets the tempo for your stroke. A well-timed kick improves stroke coordination and reduces wasted energy. - Conditioning & Core Strength:
Kick drills build leg strength, ankle flexibility, and core stability—all vital for efficient swimming.
Do YOU Need to Kick?
Yes! Even if you’re not sprinting, kicking matters for:
- Streamline off walls (push-offs and underwater dolphin kick).
- Maintaining body position during long swims.
- Reducing fatigue by balancing stroke mechanics.
What Should YOU Work On?
- Ankle Flexibility:
Pointed toes reduce drag and increase propulsion. - Kick from the Hips:
Avoid bending knees excessively—generate power from the hips and core. - Small, Fast Kicks:
Big kicks create drag; aim for quick, compact movements. - Breathing & Kick Coordination:
Practice drills like vertical kicking and kick sets with snorkels to focus on technique.
Common Mistakes in Kicking
- Kicking from the Knees:
Creates drag and wastes energy. - Poor Ankle Flexibility:
Feet acting like brakes instead of fins. - Overly Large Kick:
Slows you down and disrupts body alignment. - Neglecting Kick Training:
Many Masters swimmers skip kick sets, leading to weak legs and poor streamline.
