Fast May Invitational 2022 - Volunteer Info

Kevin Milak

Falcon Families,

We’re about 2 and a half weeks out from our first meet here at FAST for our May Invitational!

Pretty awesome hearing about great experiences at the meet this past weekend in St Pete, heard nothing but positivity about the venue, and the way the meet was run… only hope that folks will leave our meet on the 14th & 15th feeling the same way; and we can’t do it without your help.

Running meets in our home pool is awesome, we have pride in an awesome facility our swimmer call home, all the latest & greatest bells & whistles in a breathtaking venue; but it will come down to how we pull together and pull this off, and support each other that will show what we are made of.  Having home meets are a huge advantage for our athletes, being in a familiar environment, getting to sleep in their own beds at night, getting some extra sleep in the morning.. all good stuff.

We have families that have meet experience, and those that are first-timers… we want to help get everyone as prepared as we can be.  I’ll be holding some casual training sessions on volunteering positions, what they’re all about, getting some tips and tricks, and seeing what is the best fit for everyone.  We have descriptions of each of the various volunteer positions on our signup form that we have posted on the website.  Don’t hesitate to reach out, happy to talk through any questions you might have.

The signup form goes active at 8am tomorrow morning… I plugged in the “base positions”, as stuff starts to fill, I will tweak and add a few spots here and there… just trying to make sure we don’t have any holes anywhere before we even get started.

The times for Saturday and Sunday morning sessions are accurate as far as “what time to arrive” for each position, but we won’t know an exact end time until we get all of the entries in the Monday before the meet.  The Saturday afternoon session is in there as TBA, and we will firm up those on Monday the week-of as well, once we have an accurate start time for the afternoon session.

For hospitality, the first time out, we are doing to do some catering, and will be fairly simple for those folks… helping keep coolers full, bringing snacks and drinks out to the deck volunteers, etc

Colorado timing operator is a different type of position, and might not be for everyone, but if you are comfortable with a computer and like being in the middle of everything, we can train you up… some folks really enjoy doing it (it’s how I got my start running meets in the 90s), it’s one of my favorite things to do at a meet… I am doing some setup this weekend, and hope to set everything up like it will be set up for the meet on Tuesday & Wednesday evening next week – good test run for the equipment, and we can play with the timing software, hope that some of you would join me…

Another thing that we will be looking for, but is not on the sheet, are folks that can really help me out while the event is going on as part of the meet director team, keeping the “wheels greased”, seeing where folks could use some help, or filling in a gap until we come up with a “plan b”.  I’ve been running meets for 20 years, and plan to do a lot of the heavy lifting ahead of time… but I can’t be in 3 places at once on meet day… if you are a people-person, and love to help out, let me know… many hands make light work, and we want to have fun doing it.

I’ll be in the multipurpose room on the following evenings during practice on the following evenings that if you are signing up for a position that seems like a good fit, and you have questions, we’ll walk & talk and get you up to speed by the time the meet rolls around.  Just need to drop in on any of the evenings and we’ll talk through it… if you already have done any of these positions, drop in anyway, share some stories, share some “what I wish I knew before my first meet tales”, etc

Thursday, April 28th – 530pm (meet marshalls, Timers, head timers, volunteer check-in, runners)
