About the Team

About Our Team

At the heart of MEY  are Head Coach Haley Nugent and Aquatics Director Adam Sourel — two lifelong swimmers turned passionate coaches who are dedicated to building something new, inspired by the team culture we grew up loving.

Both of us started in the water as young athletes, learning lessons in discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship that shaped us far beyond the pool. Now, after years of coaching, teaching, and mentoring young people, we’re combining our experiences to lead the Manta Rays into an exciting new chapter — one that blends a competitive edge with a strong sense of community.

Our vision is to create a close-knit, inclusive team environment where swimmers of all levels feel welcome, supported, and challenged to reach their potential. We believe in developing not only skilled athletes, but well-rounded individuals who embody accountability, respect, and a lifelong love for the sport.

The water has given us so much — from personal growth to lifelong friendships — and our mission is to pass that gift forward to the next generation of swimmers. Whether you’re diving in for the first time or chasing your next championship, you’ll find a place here to belong, grow, and thrive.

Meet Coach Adam Soural

I’ve been a part of the Metuchen YMCA community for over 10 years—starting as a swimmer myself. After spending years assistant coaching and volunteering with various summer teams, I pursued a degree in Music Education at Rutgers University. Though I didn’t stay in music, I gained experience in everything from sales to teaching in public schools.

I’ve now accumulated about 6 years of swim team coaching experience, and combined with my teaching roles in public schools and other jobs, I’ve been working with and teaching young people for nearly a decade. About five years after stepping away from swimming, I returned to coach at my old team, MEY, and rediscovered my love for the sport and its community. I'm incredibly grateful to now lead the Edison Otters and work alongside such a supportive group of swimmers and parents.

Fun Facts about me... I spennd my off time rock climbing, Skiing and doing anything active.

Meet Coach Haley

With over a decade of experience as both a swim coach and instructor, I’ve dedicated my life to helping swimmers of all ages and abilities unlock their potential in the water. I first began teaching swim lessons at just 13 years old and have never looked back. From running my own swim company to coaching competitively for the past four years, the pool has always been at the heart of who I am.

There’s nothing quite like the rush of diving in — the feeling of the water flowing around you, the focus, the freedom. Swimming has shaped me not just as an athlete, but as a person. Growing up with MEY taught me discipline, resilience, and how to rise above challenges, thanks to the incredible coaches who guided me along the way.

Today, I strive to give my swimmers the same gift: to inspire, challenge, and support them as they grow both in and out of the pool. My goal is to spark a lifelong love for the sport, to help each athlete find their own strength, and to carry forward the lessons my own coaches instilled in me.
