Storm Forecast for November 6th, 2024

Writer’s Block

Usually, I have something interesting or witty and a bit informative to add to my lead-in for the newsletter.  This week—extenuating circumstances in the world have made me less witty.  We’ll get straight to the updates.

Social Events

Saturday, November 9th – BowlingNearly FIFTY people are signed up to go bowling this Saturday.  If you want to join in on the action, I’ve extended the deadline until Thursday at noon.  We've got a Pizza, Pins, & Pop deal set up with Prairie Lanes that'll give each bowler 2 hours of bowling, shoes, soda, and pizza!  We'll put friend groups and age groups together so kids can make new friends, and we'll even have some lanes for the parents!  We anticipate a cost for the whole ordeal to be around $20/person.

Bowling will take place from 12:30-2:30, so arrive a bit after 12:15 to get yourself squared away.

This is open to swimmers, siblings, coaches, and parents.  Sign up the same way you would for a swim meet and mark in the notes additional family members or friends attending.  You’ll be billed for this event.

Finding the Right Pre-Practice Food

I’m finding that a lot of our swimmers are eating bad things or nothing leading into their evening practice.  That, coupled with a meager breakfast and a moderate school lunch, is putting swimmers at a caloric debt leading into practice, forcing them to either do a full meal right before bed (which is not great for sleep) or simply not getting the calories they need for their growing bodies.  Teenage swimmers should be eating 2800-3800 calories per day, and I think if you were to track our swimmers’ diets for a couple weeks you’d find they’re not close to putting those kinds of good calories in their bodies.  The consequences of that can be pretty severe.  Please take a few minutes to read over a presentation that UW Health did for us a few years back on swimmer nutrition.  Then, track a bit of your swimmer’s habits to see how they’re doing.

Finally, one other note.  Spicy foods right before practice tend to go through swimmers just as quickly as they go in (one way or another), as a few of our Cyclone & Typhoon swimmers found out this week!
