The Importance of the Offseason
Erin & I were talking about sermon content for this week and landed on the need for breaks in swimming. There is a LOT of content focused on the benefits of getting out of the pool for a bit. A scientific report here. A great Swimswam piece here. A great mix of expert and opinion here. And several SwimmingWorld articles on a quick search. But the short version of all of these: yes, swimmers will take a step or two back in conditioning. But, that’s an easy thing to give up if you trade it for 1) some fun cross-training like rock climbing or romping around at the Prairie Kids Club 2) some family dinners and time together or 3) just doing nothing for a little while. One of the things we noticed during one of the COVID shutdowns was that a regular schedule, healthy dinners, and some cross-training allowed swimmers to come back physically stronger, taller, and re-energized when it came time to get back in the water.
So if your swimmer is asking to do laps--tell them not yet! Coach’s orders, at LEAST two weeks of no chlorine. Let us be the bad guys for this one. Go to Boulders instead!
Swim Clinics
Expertly placed two weeks after 10&U champs and three weeks after Regionals, we’ve created a few little swim clinics for swimmers of Storm and Lodi. Monday and Wednesday take place at Sun Prairie West, Tuesday at Lodi High School. These are totally optional and designed for swimmers who are BB or lower swimmers; no A cuts. Find details on all the clinics (8&U, 9-10, and 11&O) on the event page here.
Parent Practice
On Saturday, April 6th we’ll run our 2nd Parent Practice. This fun hour allows parents to experience a bit of what their swimmers go through on a daily basis, and gives some tender moments of swimmers getting to coach their moms and dads. It’s genuinely a sweet time. Parents don’t need to be fantastic swimmers, they just need to not sink and have an open mind. No signup for this one, just come join--bring goggles, a suit, and towel.
Awards Banquet
Details are now up for our Awards Banquet, Sunday April 6th at Central Heights Upper Middle School. The event starts at 5pm and typically runs about 90 minutes, with cake to follow. We’ll hand out awards from championship meets, end-of-season awards, and highlight achievements from last year’s long course season and this year’s short course season. Everyone is encouraged to attend--no charge!
