Meet Fueling
It seems like the most regular educational piece we’re needing to deliver is that on nutrition for athletes. Pre-meet, post-meet, between events…all of it. Not to be one of those “back in my day,” folks because frankly—I grew up in Appalachia and ate way too many Little Debbie snacks and drank too much Mountain Dew as a child—but, I knew when I was looking at a nutrition facts label, what I was looking at. Health classes hammered that into our heads. I had a few swimmers read the nutritional facts to their goldfish and Gatorade this weekend, and they didn’t know what they should be looking for or what they should be trying to avoid. These were teenagers and athletes, that hadn’t done any sort of thinking about the topic. So we as coaches will continue to press the message on our end giving educational talks. But we do need some help from you guys. Go over some of the example meals on this slideshow. Then a few days later, use this presentation given to our swimmers from UW Health. Page 21 is specific to things to have between events –it’s perfect! Then, go shopping with your swimmer. Have them look at some labels for things they usually eat versus things they don’t. Finally, for our teenagers…if they’re to be eating 2,800-3,800 calories per day, how many calories is that per waking hour? Compare that to the number of calories they had from the moment they woke up through their last event at their last swim meet. Then, have your swimmer help you with the snack packing for the swim meet. Finally, you’ll see some pool hosts that disallow food on deck. Candidly, we’re never going to enforce that as coaches. Having food and the right food is more important over the course of a 5 hour pool adventure.
New and Curious Parent Meeting
On Monday, December 1st we’ll have a parent meeting at Sun Prairie East High School Library at 5:30. It’ll run right around an hour. We’ll talk about things like time standards, progression through the sport, expectations, all that sort of thing. If you’re new to the sport, I strongly recommend sending someone. If you’re not new but have some unanswered questions, this is a great time. If you’re thinking them, so is someone else.
Storm-A-Thon
Our big fundraiser this year will be a Storm-A-Thon. In essence, swimmers will try and secure some donors over Thanksgiving Break, and then they’ll swim as many laps as they can on December 5th. The more money raised, the more prizes they can get. Details about the event can be found here. The big goal is to get an average of $100 donated per swimmer. That would be *massive*.
If your swimmer is taking part, please sign them up on the event page just as they would a swim meet.
The other half of this event is a silent auction. Items, experiences, crafts, you name it—we're going to try and sell it! For my gift basket, I have specifically targeted Mark Mayefske with a golf basket that includes a Nevada Bob’s gift card, ProV1s, and other fun stuff. As a finder's fee, 10% of the selling price of anything you bring to the auction will be credited to your family's account. Families have until November 24th to get their silent auction item tagged and given to Coach Lake.
Fall River
Saturday we’ll step back into the newly renovated Fall River pool. If you’ve never been there before, be sure to check the details on our pool page. Be sure to enter from the rec side at Door #10, do NOT walk through the school aimlessly from the Bradley Street entrance. Swimmers should enter/exit through the locker rooms, no more passing through the office. Tuesday nights at Fall River for Tropical & Cyclone start December 2nd!
